How to Read the Bible - Summer Study Series

Hi Folks,

this summer, we're turning our sermons into interactive seminars and spending 8 weeks studying "How to Read the Bible." I'm very excited that we'll be doing this church wide (yes, kiddos too!) Some of our teaching will be based on Fee and Stuart's book of the same name and some of it will be home grown, based on the perceived needs of our people.

To help us shape the series, I'd love you input whether you attend Discovery or are just passing by this blog. Would you consider answering these questions:

1) What is the main obstacle to your Bible reading?

2) What tool has most helped you understand the Bible better?

3) What is one of your favorite Bible passages and why?

thanks

Steve

1. "I hate to say it, lack of time in the day... I try to set aside time to read a verse or two and think about what it is telling me to do now."
2. Discussion and reading different versions ie. King James/NIV...
3. John 3:16... "That's pretty great news... Also, 2 Corinthians... "I try to find ways to apply these lessons to life now, like everything else..."

I am a blog browser passing through, but you asked for my comments, so here you go.

1. I find that I am most resistant to reading the Bible when I have areas of my life I am witholding from God. If I read His words, I may "have" to face the holes in my life.

2. When I learned to read the context of the book (who it was written to, culture) before diving into the book really made a huge difference to me. Then, after underdtanding the original message, I could then listen for God's message for me.

3. I memorized Col 3 for camp one summer, and it is amazingly practical. It pops into my head often, but that may have to do with hiding it in my heart, as the Psalmist writes. I have also found Phil 2 very helpful in my marriage and relationships.

On a side note, I think it's great you're incliding the kids in this. I grew up with an appetite for the Bible from a childhood with parents who made the Bible stories come alive. I am eternally grateful for that headstart in life.

Ok, there are my two cents!
