So it happens once in a while that I will forget a point in one message that I will remember to add in the second sermon. Often times, we'll podcast the second message but this past Sunday our soundboard blew up (again! Long story....) So we are podcasting my initial message and I have to live with adding the point here.
My point, borrowed from Tim Keller who borrowed it from Martin Luther is: Idolatry is taking a good thing and making it an ultimate thing. So love of family, desire for marriage, money, etc etc are all good things, but if made into an ultimate thing can become an idol. This is partly what Paul is getting at in Colossians when he keeps hammering away that Christ is the supreme image and that all the fullness of Christ is available to us.
Anyway, thanks to Cheryl E who struck a conversation with me after the 9am gathering to clarify love of family as a potential idol. That conversation helped me clarify what I wish I had said at 9 and what I then added at 10:30, which wasn't recorded due to aformentioned sound system issues!
Another day I'll blog on the massive cultural idolatry of modern family values in the church and how the gospel is much more concerned with building God's Kingdom than my (or my childrens') welfare. But for now I'll simply leave that provocative statement as is....
